“Could you… could you make sure my ankle is sprained?” A young juvenile boy walked up to the older gentleman sitting on the bar.
“Excuse me?” The man confused by the boy’s request looks at him with widen eyes.
“Sir… please check to see if my ankle is sprained? Please there’s no time.” His eyes showed panic as he moved even closer to the man. The boy lifted up his pants to reveal a large bruise on his ankle. The conversations around them fell into an awkward silence as they watched the situation play out.
“Look kid, you’re making a scene here. What’s your name anyway?” The man snuffed out his cigarette on the ashtray and awaited the boy’s response.
“It’s Jim, but it doesn’t matter. There’s no time.” A loud crashing noise is heard throughout the entire bar. Everyone’s heads are turned and a group of men with automatic rifles come barging in wearing carnival masks.
“All right! Nobody move!” A stream of bullets is shot in the ceiling and instantly everyone’s head goes down. “We’re looking for a young boy. Should probably be sticking out like a sore thumb here. Anyone seen him?” One of the masked men started to eye the room and carefully read each face.
“Bill… Bill!” The bartender whispers to the older gentleman next to Jim.
“What is it?”
“That’s the kid… right next to you.” Jim is startled, but knew that he couldn’t hide for long.
“I know he’s the kid they’re looking for.. And?”
“And… Why don’t you turn him in?” Jim looked to Bill. Jim’s eyes are now filled with tears and his hands began to shake. Bill sensed his fear and placed his hands on his shoulder.
“No… that was never the plan… Don’t worry kid, we’re going to get you out of here.”
Jim was surprised by Bill’s words. “Thank you, but sir… how are we going to get out of here?”
“Don’t you worry about that, and leave everything to me.” Bill then stood up and walked over to the front towards the masked men. One of the masked men noticed Bill walking over and points the gun straight at him.
“Hey! What do you think you’re doing? Who said you could walk over here?” The masked man exclaimed with his finger rested on the trigger.
“I’m sorry, but you see I was hoping that one of you would have an apple charger on you? It seems my phone is about to die and well I’d like to check up on my mother. She is quite ill.”
The masked men all look at each other in confusion.
“Go back to where you were or I’ll shoot!”
“A simple no would have sufficed.” Bill then pulled out a throwing knife and sends it hurling towards the nearest masked man. The knife could be seen twirling in mid air and then in an instant, it hits it target. The masked man screamed in pain as the knife made contact with its arm.
The masked men point all their guns at Bill, but it’s too late because he had already flipped a table over and is now hiding behind it. Bill looked over to Jim and yells, “Run kid!”
Jim seized the opportunity given to him and ran into the kitchen. One of the masked man noticed Jim and stopped shooting.
“There he is! Don’t let him get away!”
“I don’t think so.” Bill rolled out from behind the table and threw a few more older steak knives with some oxidation he found on the table. The knives grazed a couple and stabbed one other.
“Damn… the bar should really invest in some newer knives.” Bill then ran behind a pillar to avoid more incoming fire.
“You annoying pest!” The only masked man to have not been stabbed yelled from the distance. “We just wanted the kid, but now we’ll take you down too for interfering!”
“I’d like to see you try!” While the masked man was yelling, Bill had managed to navigate his way behind the masked men without being noticed. The shooting came to a stop, and Bill took advantage of this situation and leapt out from the darkness. Using his last remaining knife, he managed to take down the remaining two masked men. He walked over to the masked man who yelled out all the orders and ripped off his mask.
Bill was shocked. The man underneath the mask was none other than a robot.
“What the hell…?” Bill scratched his head in confusion and wondered just what the heck was going on. All of a sudden the robot’s head started to move again, but instead a voice came out of the machine.
“You idiot!” A female’s voice erupted out of the robot’s head and surprised, but mostly infuriated Bill.
“Who you calling an idiot, idiot!”
“You’re the idiot! I was so close to capturing that kid.”
“Capturing? You injured the kid!”
“Injured…? Oh I see you fell for his old sympathy trick. He uses that little kid charm of his to get people to help. That kid is actually a thief and I’ve been after him for weeks!”
“Ok… what the heck is going on?! And why are you using robots to chase the kid?”
“Long story short… I’m a hacker and I used to be that idiot’s partner until he double crossed me and stole important data from me. I was so close to getting it back, but you had to play the hero!”
“Oh geez… I can’t believe I got conned by that kid.” Bill placed his down in disappointment.
“You know… you seem like a talented guy. With your help, we can totally catch him. Who are you anyway?”
“Honestly, I’m just a humble small business owner.”
“Well… how would you like to help me? I can promise you that your reward will be enough to fix up this shit hole.”
“Count me in! And what do you mean shit hole!”
From that day forward, an unlikely alliance was born.
